A little light reading
This is the pile of books I have on my TBR table (there’s no more room on the shelf).
Just a little light bedtime reading.
I realize many people have had enough of pandemics recently but I’ve become fascinated by the Black Death (hereinafter The Plague)— did you know that, in many places, the first wave wiped out between 40-60% of the population?!
Imagine your neighbourhood of 300 people suddenly being cut in half to 150. Ten years later, you’ve added a few more people back in, so let’s say there’s now 175 people. Then the second wave comes and wipes out 30% of the population, so you’re at 123 (rounded up). Granted, there was generally more than 10 years between infections in an area, but can you imagine the impact of that?
I come from a euro-centric education, and when we learned about The Plague, it didn’t include the impact of it outside of Europe — China lost a similar percentage of people.
I don’t know that we’ll ever truly understand the ripple effects that are still impacting us today. But I want to learn more.
Do you have anything like that where you’re like “I am fascinated by this strange thing to be fascinated by”? Or any books about The Plague you’d like to share?
Despite the light reading, I’m making progress on book 4 of The Lyra Cycle (which I still need a really long title for) is coming together.
Books for your TBR shelf
No books for your TBR shelf this week, unless you want to read of book about The Plague. Though I did recently finish You Sexy Thing by Cat Rambo — it was entirely enjoyable. I’ll probably read more … once I’m finished the pile above.
If you’re looking for something to read in the meantime, check out the stories on Armchair Alien — I’ll be rerunning a story starting mid-September (yes, I know it’s already mid-September).
Happy Reading
