I’ve only been to a handful of fan cons (fan expos, comic cons, etc) and most of those have been as a vendor. This weekend, I crewed an Armchair Alien booth at a local con with my AA co-conspirator, Jeannette Bedard.
The downsides of being behind a booth is that you’re behind the booth most of the event — you miss out of workshops and talks and contests. But the plus side is almost everyone walks by at one point or another, and you get to see the diversity of people attending.
I love that you not only get people wearing their everyday clothes and cosplaying as their favourite characters but also dressing as characters their made up. And as someone who’s not a spring chicken, it’s great to see people of all ages enjoying the event.
So far, I’ve only gone wearing my everyday clothes — next time, I’m embracing the cosplay … if I can get my act together.
Do you attend fan cons? Do you cosplay? I’d love to hear about your experiences (or see pictures!)
Writing update
I got distracted by a short story, which will be showing up on the Armchair Alien newsletter soon. It’s kind of a fantasy but might lead to a space fantasy series in 5 years. But, for now, I’m back at work finishing book 4 in the Lyra Cycle.
Books for your TBR shelf
I’ve read so many books lately but here’s a couple that stand out:
African Europeans: Non-fiction book about the extensive history of people of African ancestry in Europe. The book was good but I wish it had gone deeper on some of the people mentioned, which I guess is difficult when you’re surveying 2000+ years of history.
Gideon the Ninth: I really enjoyed this sci-fi, fantasy, horror mash-up. I don’t know if that’s how the author describes it but that’s what it felt like to me. Gideon was fantastic.
Now I’m reading The Three-Body Problem before I watch the TV adaptation. I was hoping to be finishing the Murderbot Diaries, but the library keeps delivering book 7 and I still need to read book 6.
