I’m writing this edition while trying to distract myself from our local election. I’ll find out tomorrow the future my fellow Canucks have decided on for us.
This round of editing on book 4 of The Lyra Cycle is almost done. I realize I say that every time, but this time I really mean it.
If you’re looking for a story in the universe, read A Lone Star on the Lady Liberty over on the Armchair Alien newsletter.
It stars a side character from book 2 (which is this month’s book of the month). And has a character who might get her own story someday.
A curious thing
One of the things I love about writing science fiction is being able to create fantastic creatures. However, our world is also full of fantastic creatures. One of the environments that both fascinates me and terrifies me is the deep sea. The animals it produces are weird, wonderful and the stuff of nightmares.
The giant isopod might be the least terrifying. It’s just crazy that it’s over a foot long — that’s chihuahua size.
Stuff of nightmares would be the dragonfish (though they’re also weird — only the females have fangs but those fangs are embedded with nanocrystals that give them a stronger bite than sharks (they also lure prey with bioluminescent barbels).
Sometimes I feel like I can’t compete with the real world. However, reading this article from Live Science, I do wonder if aliens living in a similar environment would seem familiar to us. Would convergent evolution — where unrelated animals develop similar characteristics to adapt to similar environments — apply on a galactic scale?
Books for your TBR shelf
In between editing, I finished Ardent Violet and the Infinite Eye, the second book in The Starmetal Symphony series by Alex White. If you haven’t read book 1, August Kitko and the Mechas from Space, start there.
Happy reading!
