I’ve been told by a friend that I led you on last week. I promised a pair of ducks and there were no ducks! Am I the only one who sees ‘paradox’ and hears ‘pair of ducks’.
Anyway, said friend (you know who you are) made me think that I need to give you some ducks. But what ducks to give you?
My favourite ducks…?
Mergansers obviously top the list. They harken back to my wannabe punk days. They’re the original rock star duck.
Then there’s wood ducks — they’re just a piece of art.
But I don’t think those are the ducks you’re looking for. My friend had another suggestion.
Munckin ducks…?
Friend thought I might talk about the role of ducks in Munchkin. Have you ever played Munchkin? It’s a dungeon adventure card game where you (an elf thief or an orc bard or a dwarf cleric) or a try to beat your fellow players to the end, fighting monsters and flinging curses along the way. It’s full of magical items and curses. Like the Duck of Many Things or the Duck of Doom. It’s been a while since I’ve played Munchkin, but generally ducks seem bad.
Instead of ducks that exist in Munchkin, how about the cards I would add?
The Duck of Transmogrification
This would let you transform yourself for that round into any race or class (for example, if needed to fight a monster or use a magical item). But every power needs a downside — you can’t use anything that needs hands … because ducks don’t have hands.
The Duck of Melodious Quacking
This has to be a curse, right? Or maybe a weapon you can throw at a monster, something that chases them away like an angry, hissing duck? But what would the price of using it be? A price must be paid.
Writing update
I hope you don’t mind my ducky meanderings. But despite meandering, book 3 in The Lyra Cycle should be up for pre-order soon! I will, of course, tell you here first.
Books for your TBR shelf
I’ve gotten myself into a thoroughly enjoyable, very beachy read — Adventures of a Vegan Vamp. I picked up the first book for free, and now I’m hooked.
If you’re more into sci-fi right now, you can still pick up the Space Opera Sisterhood bundle. Get the four core books (including a boxset of books 1-2 in The Lyra Cycle) for $5, or pick up the extended bundle for $20 … or more if you want to do more to support authors. And you can give to a good cause at the same time.
And, if you’re looking for something shorter, check out the serialized stories on Armchair Alien. Boots on the Ground (by my co-conspirator) finished recently.
Happy reading!
