Happy May 24!
But it’s May 23….
We just had the traditional start of summer in my neck of the woods, celebrated with the “May 24” long weekend. The nominal reason is Victoria Day, and this weekend falls around about the 24th of May … but, more importantly, is often celebrated with a two-four of beer. I did not celebrate it that way — I didn’t not want a migraine. Instead I pulled weeds from the garden. F@#$&% bindweed.
In between gardening and being attacked by a dog, I’ve also been doing some chores around home. I love it (minus the newspaper and tape) — what do you think?
Writing update
I finally finished the short story I was working on … the 10,000 word short story. It should appear first over on the Armchair Alien newsletter some time soon. It’s part of a challenge I’m doing with my co-conspirator. The story takes place in the same universe as the Lyra Cycle, with one of the side characters from book 2. Speaking of which, A Lost Ship in a Dark Grave is the book of the month this month. Pick it up for free if you’re a paid subscriber, or get a discount on our store.
You can also grab book 1 for 99 cents from our store or your online book store of choice.
Now that that’s done, I’m working on the final edits to book 3 … which means plotting out book 4. I’ve always planned this as a 6 book series, and I expect it to stay that way. If I want to write more in the universe (and I do), I’ll spin up another cycle (hence the series title — The Lyra Cycle).
What I’m reading / watching
I’m currently reading a non-fiction book, Eating to Extinction, about foods on the verge of extinction. It’s incredible to consider how unvaried most of our diets are these days, despite row upon row of boxes on the grocery store shelves.
After that, I’m probably going to read Wool so I can start watching Silo. Have you read the series? Have you started watching the show? Thoughts?
Books for your TBR shelf
If non-fiction books about rare foods aren’t your thing, try discovering a new sci-fi or fantasy author with these free stories.
Or you can still pick up some great books in the Space Impact promo.
Happy reading!
