Can I go back to the other timeline now?
After a rollercoaster few weeks, I think I want off this ride — I was never good with rollercoasters anyway
Seriously, I struggled with this edition of the newsletter. I don’t know about you but the last few weeks have left me dizzy and a little bit nauseous — okay, I also slipped and smacked my head on the floor but that’s not the only reason.
I had planned to have a weekend of ignoring the world and doing some serious editing before the head smacking. Instead I finally started watching Our Flag Means Death — three episodes in, I think I’m going to love this show. The head is still a little achy and I think I landed so hard I have whiplash. Hopefully nothing worse than that — but man, I’ve banged my head too many times in this life. I should start wearing a helmet.
Though I still managed to finish a scene I skipped over in the first draft.
My curious cat thing
I have “curious cat” in my tagline here — and it’s not because I’m weird curious (okay, maybe I am) but because I love learning about history, culture, science … stuff (I’m sure there are better words but brain smacking). And I’m trying to lean into that and share some of the cool factoids or interesting pieces of history I find.
So … one of the cool things I learned last week is that the genetic adaptation that helps Tibetans and Sherpas breathe at such a high altitudes likely came from Denisovans. Neanderthals weren’t the only ancient humans we interbred with! The story of identifying the Denisovans is also interesting — they were the first ancient humans identified first by DNA.
Books for your TBR shelf
There’s a lot of BS going right now, and I’ll admit I’ve been escaping into other worlds. I’m currently reading The Last Gifts of the Universe by Riley August (in between episodes of Our Flag Means Death). If you’re looking for some escape — and have Kobo Plus (it’s good to diversify your personal economy) — check out these magical and out-of-this-world books.
And if you haven’t yet read my co-conspirator’s story over at Armchair Alien, why not?
Happy reading!
