I almost titled this post “I give up” (we’ll get to that) but I was in the allotment garden this morning and saw the most wonderful sight - I have a bean! Okay, it’s still so small I couldn’t get a decent picture of it, but it’s there.
I realize I get ridiculously excited about my beans … like, two posts ago, I rhapsodized about beans — seriously, I might have a problem. But we all need something, right? And this week is a week of life stuff carried over from The Stuff from earlier this year, so I’ll take the joy I find in beans … and the other things growing in the garden, from the zucchini (this is less joyful but it’s fine) and the lovely California poppies, the carrots and the sunflowers.
Do you have a thing that you geek out over where other people look at you sidelong and say ‘okay, that’s great’ … or just look at you sidelong and edge away?
As I mentioned, I almost titled this “I give up”. Every year, I grow radishes and every year, I get one, maybe two before they get woody and bolt. So a few years ago, I embraced that fact. I still grow radishes but I know grow them for the radish pods. Sometimes we have to adapt our plans to account for reality. And pickled radish pods on salad is a revelation. I basically use a recipe similar to this one — I also choose to ferment because I’m lazy 😂.
P.S. the most wonderful time of the year is not Christmas - it’s when the beans are ready to harvest. And I do have a story idea about a crazy bean lady.
Writing update
In between working in the garden and Life Stuff, I’m plodding away at the final edits to book 3. I’m still aiming for a September release. The plot for the next book is also coalescing.
Filling the well
I’m currently working my way through Silo, the Wool omnibus. I figured I need to read the books before watching the TV show.
After I finish that, I think I need to buy An Immense World — the book about animal senses. I got halfway through the ebook from the library before the library took it back, and every time they deliver it again, I’m in the middle of another book … but what I read was really good.
