Happy 2024! How is that possible?
Although I don’t do new year’s resolutions, the new year can be a time to try new things. So I’m trying a new thing — I’m turning on pledges here.
What’s a pledge? Well, it is kind of what it sounds like. You can pledge to subscribe to this newsletter … if I ever turn on subscriptions. What would you get … if I ever turn on subscriptions? Gratitude. Lots of gratitude. It really is only something to do it you want to support my writing. And if you want to do that, I’d suggest signing up for a paid subscription to Armchair Alien. You’d get a bit more than gratitude … still a hefty helping of gratitude but a bit more on the side.
If you do pledge, I promise I won’t turn on paid subscriptions without letting you know, and giving you the chance to cancel.
What I’m writing
Speaking of Armchair Alien, Grim’s tale is coming! It start serializing there on Friday. If you don’t Grim, he’s the very ordinary ship’s cat in The Lyra Cycle. I’ve always included him in my plan to write back stories for all the crew. Granted, Grim is still only a secondary character in A Hangman Comes to Tyche but it is a bit of his life before he comes to the Lyra.
Now I've picked up a half finished story that I’m hopping to wrap up … but I had a shiny new idea yesterday.
What I’m reading
I’m going to start a post for 2024 with the books I’ve read. I only remember about half of those in 2023.
So far, I’ve finished An Edible History of Humanity. This one took a bit for me to get into but the discussion of the ancient spice trade also inspired me to take an armful of books on maritime history. Did you know the ancient Egyptians were sailing to India in the BCE times?! I knew Arabic traders have plied those waters for ages but I didn’t the Egyptians did too.
And now I’ve moved onto finished the Vegan Vamp series I’ve mentioned before :) I’m on book 7. Did I ever mention I have eclectic taste in books?
