Writing, books, and women's history
More interesting things about human history, as well as a writing updates and books for your TBR shelf.
Well. It’s been a couple of weeks, hasn’t it? I’ve found it hard to concentrate sometimes. However, I'm still working away on edits for the next book. I feel that’s my update every time — but it’s true. I’ve been adding more words than I’m taking away, and I think I’m in the “this isn’t so bad after all” phase of the editing hype cycle. Though unlike the business hype cycle, I’m pretty sure I’ll have another trough of despair disillusionment.
In between editing, I’ve been fiddling with painting. This is the latest — it’s fun but I need practice.
Books for your TBR shelf
This month is all book recommendations.
The first to celebrate women’s history month. Yes, I know that, like Black history, women’s history should be studied as part of history … but since we tend to overlook women in history, going so far as to assume the skeleton buried with weapons and armour must be a man, it’s important to call it out.
I’ve been a fan of the What’s Her Name podcast for a while. It’s full of stories of fascinating women. And the hosts wrote a book — What’s Her Name: A History of the World in 80 Lost Women.
Although I love the story of Fu Hao, a badass warrior queen from 1200 BCE, the two women that stand out to me the most (so far) are Zazil-ha and Malintzin (aka La Malinche) — two women who lived in what is now Mexico when the Spanish arrived. They both seized opportunities from those available to them, but followed very different paths which have echoed through the centuries.
In between writing and painting and the day job and reading about amazing women … I read Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree — highly recommend if you’re looking for a light, fun read to escape from the world. I’ll definitely be getting the second book.
Happy reading!
