A writing update ... for real this time!
As well as more cool history and books for your TBR shelf
I have news! Whether it’s good or not, time will tell. Book 4 of The Lyra Cycle is drafted and off to the beta reader.
Which means I can start working on Shiny New Idea. Shiny New Idea is still sci-fi … but also mystery. So that’ll fun. But it means I need to lay a good foundation.
Have you read any great sci-fi mysteries that you can recommend?
Hopefully next time, I’ll have an update from what’s come to be called The Farm.
A curious thing
I’m back to ancient history this time. At one point, I wanted to be an archaeologist — maybe I’ve mentioned that before, and that might be why I have a couple of space archaeologists in The Lyra Cycle — but I also love the history of language. I feel I could happily be an archaeolinguist.
Which is why I had to click on this story about the earliest example of an alphabet (not writing but an alphabet — they’re not the say). The article is a few years old so it might not be the oldest anymore.
It’s phrase on a comb: “may this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard”. Does anyone else have memories of sitting in front of the TV while their mom combed the hair with a nitpick? The more things change the more they stay the same?
And if you trace that Phoenician alphabet forward, along one of the branches, you find English.
This image is not Phoenician. It’s an unknown language on the Phaistos disc, but I was fortunate enough to visit Crete (amazing!) and see it in person.
